1981년 결성한 US 하드코어 펑크 1세대 레전드 밴드인 크로맥스(Cro-Mags)는 언제나 하드코어 펑크 리스너들에게 화두의 대상이었다. 최근의 크로맥스는 초창기 멤버였던 보컬의 존 조셉(John Joseph)과 드럼의 매키 제이슨(Mackie Jayson)을 주축으로 하는 ‘크로맥스’ 그리고 베이시스트이자 크로맥스 결성의 결정적인 역할을 한 할리 플래내건(Harley Flanagan)의 솔로 활동으로 양분화되었고, 서로 대립했다. 2018년에는 할리 플래내건이 존 조셉과 매키 제이슨을 상대로 ‘Cro-Mags’를 두고 권리 소송을 제기했고 2019년 4월 22일에 존 조셉과 할리 플래내건이 동시에 각각의 성명서를 공지했다.

“As all of our loyal fans and supporters know, John Joseph, Mackie Jayson, A.J. Novello and Craig Setari have been performing as the ‘Cro-Mags’ for many years. Due to recent litigation involving Harley Flanagan, John Joseph and Mackie Jayson, we have all agreed that for the benefit of our fans and supporters we want to make sure that everyone knows who it is they are coming out to see. Therefore we have reached a settlement designed to avoid any further confusion. The lead singer and drummer on Age of Quarrel, John and Mackie, along with A.J. and Craig, going forward will perform under the name Cro-Mags ‘JM’ which we have a legal right to use. The ‘JM’ stands for John/Mackie. Of course, we need some time to make this change. There will be a three month transition where our shows may still be advertised as Cro-Mags and Harley will also be performing as Cro-Mags. During this transition period, to confirm which band you want to see, please check on our websites or social media pages. As of August 1, 2019, all shows under the Cro-Mags ‘JM’ name will feature us, and all shows under the Cro-Mags name (on its own) will feature Harley. Thanks for your patience as we wrap this up. Now that this is all said and done, we will be working on a new studio album, while continuing to deliver the live performances our fans have come to know and love over the years. 할리 플래내건의 개인 유튜브 채널에 업로드된 성명서 낭독 영상
2019년 8월 1일을 기해 모든 ‘Cro-Mags’의 권리가 할리 플래내건에게 넘어가고 존과 매키는 ‘Cro-Mags JM’이라는 명칭으로 활동하게 된다는 결과로 법적 분쟁이 마무리되었다. 하지만 2012년 뉴욕의 유명한 공연장인 웹스터 홀(Webster Hall)에서 크로맥스가 공연을 앞두고 있을 때 할리 플래내건이 백스테이지에서 일부 크로맥스 멤버들에게 칼부림을 한 사건부터 90년대 크로맥스 시절 때 투어 수익을 횡령한 사건 등 부적절했던 과거들을 꺼내며 하드코어 신(Scene)에 있는 몇몇 주축 인사들과 리스너들은 법적 결과에 부정적인 입장을 취하고 있는 듯하다.
다만 할리 플래내건이라는 인물이 뉴욕 펑크 신에서 하드코어 이전부터 쌓은 커리어와 배드 브레인즈(Bad Brains), 힙합 그룹 비스티보이즈(Beastie Boys)와 같은 레전드들과 어깨를 나란히 할 정도의 무지막지한 영향력을 지니고 있다는 점, 2017년에는 미국 서부 최대 하드코어 펑크 페스티벌 ‘Sound and Fury’에서 헤드라이너로 공연하거나, 바이스 매거진(Vice magazine)의 콘텐츠에도 자주 등장하는 등 입지전적인 인물이기에 그를 지지하는 사람들은 대체로 축하하는 분위기다. 법적으로는 일단락되었지만, 하드코어 신 전체로 놓고 봤을 때는 ‘크로맥스 분쟁’은 쉽사리 끝나지 않을 전망이다.
